Advisory: Missourians to gather for Joplin Community Memorial Service on Sunday

May 27, 2011
Gov. Nixon, President Obama to speak at service led by local clergy at Missouri Southern State University

At 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, Missourians will gather for a Joplin Community Memorial Service in the wake of the devastating tornado that struck the city last Sunday.  The service will take place at the Taylor Performing Arts Center on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.  Clergy from the Joplin area will lead the service, and a local choir will provide musical accompaniment.  Gov. Jay Nixon will deliver a message at the service, and President Barack Obama will offer brief remarks.

"In the face of incredible trials and devastating losses, the people of Joplin have shown incredible compassion, determination and faith," Gov. Nixon said.  "That faith gives us the strength to move forward.  On Sunday, all Missourians will pause to mourn for those killed by this devastating storm, and to stand together as we begin the process of rebuilding and recovery.  It is an honor to have the President of the United States join us for this community memorial service, and we know his words will bring hope and healing."

Details on ticketing and public attendance at the memorial service will be announced later today.  Overflow seating will be available for those who cannot be accommodated inside the Taylor Performing Arts Center.

Media coverage of the memorial service will be open, but members of the media must apply for credentials.  Media may apply for credential from noon today (Friday, May 27) through noon tomorrow (Saturday, May 28) through the White House communications website:
