Gov. Nixon appoints Alvin Brooks to Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Gov. Jay Nixon announced today that he has appointed Alvin L. Brooks (D), of Kansas City, to the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners.  Under state statute, the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners operates the Kansas City Police Department.

"For the past 50 years, Alvin Brooks has served the Kansas City community in numerous ways, as a leader for countless community groups and organizations; as an advocate for children and the disadvantaged; as a public servant; and as a police detective and patrol officer," Gov. Nixon said.  "Alvin's clear vision and steadfast leadership have helped move Kansas City forward, and he will bring profound experience and insight to the Board of Police Commissioners."

Brooks was elected to the Kansas City Council in 1999 and 2003.  During his tenure on the Council, he served as Mayor Pro Tem, and he chaired numerous committees, including Public Safety, Police Capital Improvements Oversight and Police Site Selection.  He also was vice-chair of the Aviation and Finance and Audit committees.

Brooks helped found Kansas City's Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, and served as the organization's president and CEO from 1991 to 2000.  In 1989, he was appointed by President George H. W. Bush to serve on the President's National Drug Advisory Council.  He has served as a volunteer, leader and consultant to numerous community groups, organizations and causes.

The Governor has appointed Brooks to fill the seat previously held by James B. Wilson.  This appointment is subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate.
