Gov. Nixon makes board and commission appointments, including Coordinating Board for Higher Education
Jefferson CiTY, Mo. - Gov. Jay Nixon today announced his appointments to three boards and commissions; those appointees will be subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate. The appointees, along with their boards and hometowns, are:
- Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners (Jacklyn J. Crow - Mexico)
- Board of Examiners for Hearing Instrument Specialists (Sharlene Rimiller - Jefferson City)
- Coordinating Board for Higher Education (Betty Sims - Ladue)
Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners
The Governor has appointed Jacklyn J. Crow, of Mexico, to the Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. The Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners licenses and registers all persons engaged in the practice of hairdressing, cosmetology and manicuring in this state, which the board controls, supervises and enforces the terms and provisions of the statute.
Crow is currently the cosmetology instructor for the Mexico School of Cosmetology. She previously owned a cosmetology business in Vandalia. The Governor has appointed her for a term ending May 1, 2014.
Board of Examiners for Hearing Instrument Specialists
The Governor has appointed Sharlene Rimiller, of Jefferson City, to serve on the Board of Examiners for Hearing Instrument Specialists. The board reviews applicants for licensure and makes recommendations to the division on matters of discipline of licenses; reviews and approves other states with equivalent or stricter requirements for reciprocal licenses; approves the examination required for licensure and may administer the practical portion of the examination; reviews and approves courses for continuing education credits required for license renewal.
Rimiller is the retired executive director of the Missouri Dental Board. She previously served as the executive director for the state Board of Optometry, the Board of Chiropractic Examiners, the Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors and the state Board of Podiatry. The Governor has appointed her for a term ending Jan. 1, 2012.
Coordinating Board for Higher Education
The Governor has appointed Betty Sims (R), of St. Louis County, to the Coordinating Board for Higher Education. The Coordinating Board of Higher Education coordinates the state system of higher education, which includes 13 public four-year colleges and universities, 17 public two-year community colleges, one public two-year technical college, 25 independent colleges and universities, 120 proprietary schools and 39 specialized independent schools and colleges and theological institutions.
Sims served as a Missouri state senator from 1995 to 2002. At various times as a senator, she was the Assistant Floor Leader; chair of the Aging, Families and Mental Health Committee; and vice-chair of the Committee on Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence. Sims recently retired as a project specialist with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. She also served as chairman and member of the State Board of Accountancy from 1982 to 1987.
She received a bachelor's degree from Washington University and an MBA from Southern Illinois University. The Governor has appointed Sims for a term ending June 27, 2016.
