Gov. Nixon declares state of emergency in Missouri in response to severe weather
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Gov. Jay Nixon today signed Executive Order 10-22 to declare a state of emergency in Missouri in response to severe weather that began on June 12. The weather system has involved flooding, flash flooding, high winds, hail and tornadoes throughout the state.
On June 15, Gov. Nixon issued Executive Order 10-21, which opened the State Emergency Operations Center in response to these storms. Today's order follows on those initial steps by activating the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan, which allows state agencies to coordinate directly with local jurisdictions to provide emergency services.
"Severe weather continues to threaten homes, businesses, farms and communities across our state, especially as floodwaters continue to rise in northwest Missouri," Gov. Nixon said. "The state of Missouri stands ready to assist communities in responding to and recovering from these storms. Together, we will overcome these challenges and get these communities up and running again."
Gov. Nixon visited northwest Missouri last week to survey flood damage at Big Lake State Park and meet with local emergency responders in Mound City.
Citizens who need disaster information, shelter information, and referrals are urged to call 211. The 211 Service is now available for most areas of Missouri. In areas where the 211 service is not operational, citizens may call 800-427-4626. Updated information on flood levels also is available on the state's Web site, MO.gov.
State agencies that can be activated for duty under the order include: Missouri Department of Public Safety, State Emergency Management Agency, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri State Water Patrol, Division of Fire Safety, Department of Agriculture, Department of Conservation, Department of Corrections, Department of Health and Senior Services, Department of Mental Health, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Social Services, Department of Transportation and the Office of Administration.
