Gov. Nixon issues statement in support of planning to restore native elk in southern Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Gov. Jay Nixon today released the following statement regarding the Conservation Commission's vote to resume planning for the restoration of elk in southern Missouri:

"Restoring our state's native elk population could have important conservation and economic benefits, and I support the Commission's decision to resume planning for possible restoration of elk in a targeted area in southern Missouri.   In developing the plan, the Department of Conservation will carefully examine factors such as habitat, herd management, and health and safety, and Missourians will have multiple opportunities to participate in the process.  The benefits of elk for tourism and hunting in Missouri could be significant, and I look forward to reviewing the final results of the planning process."
