Great attractions, sold-out concert and beautiful weather helped boost ticket sales
State Fair attendance up nearly seven percent in 2011, Gov. Nixon reports
JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Jay Nixon today reported that attendance for the 2011 Missouri State Fair was up nearly seven percent over last year's numbers. Final attendance numbers for the 11-day Fair confirm 343,397 attendees.
"Once again, we had a wonderful Fair," Gov. Nixon said. "The sold-out Jason Aldean concert on Saturday helped boost attendance on the first weekend, and we enjoyed great weather during the entire 11-day run. I want to thank all of the farmers, ranchers and producers across Missouri who helped make the 2011 State Fair one to remember."
Some new events celebrated at this year's State Fair included Missouri Farmers Care Food Drive Tuesday and a Bluegrass music festival held Wednesday, headlined by Missouri native Rhonda Vincent. Returning events were also enjoyed by thousands of fairgoers, including the second annual Military Appreciation Day held on Sunday.
This year's military day offered a special tribute to Vietnam veterans. Nearly 100 motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard Riders attended a ceremony held in the Mathewson Exhibition Center. Wolfe said that the presence of the riders on the arena floor was a poignant display of appreciation to military service men and women.
"I am extremely proud that the State Fair honors Missourians involved in our military," said Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. "This special day was started by Gov. Nixon last year, and it is a tradition that we will certainly continue."
The agriculture showcase at this year's Fair was once again another premier event. Nearly every county in Missouri was represented, including more than 4,000 Missouri 4-H and FFA youth. There were nearly 30,000 livestock and competitive exhibit entries, including increases in the equine, swine, sheep, poultry and Home Economics categories.
"The State Fair is our state's premier agriculture showcase, and this year was another great success," Director of Agriculture Dr. Jon Hagler said. "The State Fair continues to honor its agricultural roots, while offering something for everyone."
