Electricity Made from Trash
September 10, 2009

Gov. Jay Nixon details the benefits of turning the region's largest landfill into a source of electrical power during a press conference in Maryland Heights on September 10. Ameren UE, the St. Louis region's investor-owned utility provider, and waste hauler Fred Weber Inc. have agreed to install combustion turbines at Fred Weber's Maryland Heights landfill that will use methane collected from the landfill to produce electricity. When the plant is completed in 2011, it's expected to produce enough electricity to power 10,000 homes.download
