Gov. Jay Nixon today appointed Barrett Hatches as chairman of the Missouri Gaming Commission. The Gaming Commission enforces the statutes and regulations relating to charitable bingo and riverboat gambling. Hatches (D), of Kansas City, replaces James L. Mathewson, who stepped down from the position at the end of May.

In 2010, Hatches was appointed by Gov. Nixon as a member of the Missouri Gaming Commission for a term that expires in April 2013. Hatches is the former president and CEO of Northern Indiana Public Service Company and of Enstar Natural Gas in Alaska, and was director of field services for Missouri Gas Energy.

He currently is the president of the business consultant firm Hatches Consulting LLC in Kansas City. Before starting that business, Hatches served as chief operating officer for Swope Community Enterprises (SCE), which includes Swope Health Services, a non-profit health system; and Swope Community Builders, a community development corporation.

From 1978 to 1992, Hatches worked for Sante Fe Railroad, including as a special agent directing all criminal investigations involving the railroad and its employees.
